Roseau Times Region Article - 75th Anniversary Cookbook
Posted on Sunday 03 February

Roseau Times Region Newspaper ArticlesThe beautiful Roseau County 75th Anniversary Cookbook has been a great success with those who have purchased it. It is a wonderful record of the history of the county as well as recipes to delight and whet the appetite!

The first picture is of P.O. Fryklund, Roseau County’s Museum Founder, Fryklund’s collection of thousands of artifacts are shown in interpretive exhibits in the museum. We can thank Eddy Billberg, one of the founders and the first president of the Roseau County Historical Society for much of our recorded history of the county.
The cover photograph is taken in our kitchen exhibit at the museum. In gathering pictures for the dividers, we tried to concentrate on photos with relationships to food and it was also important to us to try to get pictures from all areas of the county. Photo and excerpts from “A Time to Fish and a Time to Dry Nets is used with Alvin Johnston's permission. Another divider has a photo of Nellie and Bert Soltau serving coffee to Norm Hohn in his logging camp at Northwest Angle. There’s one with Pearl Mittering, the cook at Malung school with students Barbara Anderson and Phyllis Skoien, another divider has a photo of A Cake and Cookie workshop sponsored by Extension Service with Bernice Anderson, Rose Halvorson, Ann Grahn, Dorothy Hoosier and Lucy Duray , women from all over the county. There are more interesting pictures.
There are recipes and notes submitted by family members and friends in memory of a former Historical Society Board member, to honor a family member, or a friend. Aliza Novacek Olson submitted recipes from World War I, like Fried Mush, made by her grandmother Martha who was married to Frank Novacek, a WWI veteran. This is what she had to say about Fried Mush, “It was awful, but when you are hungry anything tastes good!” In the Ethnic Foods section we have three Rommegrot recipes and one of those is Lloyd Johnson’s of Karlstad and this is his comments—“this recipe makes enough to feed 1 hungry Norwegian or 16 Swedes”. There are recipes used by the cooks at the Salol School, the Greenbush Hospital, etc. Gilmore Flaten’s Smoked Fish recipe is in the Main Food section. And how about some special recipes from an Eskimo cookbook from Alaska submitted by Rudy Billberg-featuring Soured Seal Liver, Eskimo Ice Cream or Bear Feet? This is a fun book to read, besides many good recipes for you to try.
A special thank you goes to Sheila Winstead for guidance of this huge project. We appreciate each person who sent in a recipe and special notes and helped in any way to complete this cookbook. We are grateful to Jean Honl for her beautiful original Rosemale designs used throughout the book. Also thank you to the many volunteers who have helped put in dividers.
We have only printed a limited number of books, so get your copy now. Cookbooks are available for sale at Mattson’s Pharmacy, Mike’s Drug, Pam’s Pantry, Wally’s and the Museum in Roseau; the Twin’s Café and JBZ Market in Badger; Bozes, Greenbush Pharmacy, Ace Hardware, Squid’s Super Valu in Greenbush, and any RCHS board of director member.
