Roseau County Centennial Book

Published in 1994 in celebration of the Roseau County Centennial which was celebrated in 1995. 323 pages of Roseau County history was brought to life by the residents of Roseau County in this soft cover book.

As the Preface tells us:

From the west they came - strong, determined men - some on foot, others on horseback, but most with wagons, drawn by horses or oxen.  Some came alone, but others brought their families.  with all their worldly goods in the wagon and a tethered cow walking behind, they moved slowly on toward the valley of the Roseau.

They camped at night on the sand and gravel beach of ancient Lake Agassiz, one of nature's gifts to travelers in this web and undrained land.  Around campfires that burned bright with dried branches and fallen oak logs, they talked excitedly of the Roseau Valley. They spoke of rumors of its lush green grass, its abundance of fur, fish and game, of the rich black soil and vast lands available for homesteading.

Around the bright, hot fire they sat with imaginations running wild.  Weird, flashing shadows moved in the dark forest behind them.  Was not this the old War-Road where the Sioux and the Chippewa once fought a fierce and deadly battle?  Here, too, on this narrow sand ridge, Sioux warriors moved swiftly to the Lake of the Woods to kill and capture their Chippewa enemies, and they once destroyed a party of French voyageurs on Massacre Island.  Some nights sleep came hard, but in the light of day all was well.  The parties moved on, for the Indians of the Roseau Valley wee said to be friendly - and they were.
