Errata in the Centennial Book

Roseau Times Region Newspaper Articles

 

We would like to thank those who were instrumental in assisting us with this errata.

 Map in Beginning of book is incorrect in the fact that there was no Great Northern RR to Warroad in 1907.

 Pg. 4                John Nelson’s niece, not his daughter.

 Pg. 36               Mike Holm 1886, not 1896.

 Pg. 92               The tree in the poem LONE PINE was cut down in 1970.

 Pg. 14               Early Politics, the Court House was $1,400 instead of $14,000.

 Pg. 10               Fort St. Charles is located on Magnussen Island -not Magnussons about 35 miles from Warroad -not 60 miles.

Pg. 11               Battle of Two Rivers ‘at an undetermined date’ -date given in Roseau County Times 10/1/1897 is 1857, information is also in Ash Wash’s obituary. 

Pg. 13               Marschalk not Marshalk; passed over on of the best known pioneer politicians, Albert Berg, he got the drainage for the county. 

Pg. 22               There was no train in Salol in 1900. Cap Nelson was riding the hand care in 1910 when the fires in Solar County got out of control not in Salol (not confirmed). 

Pg. 22               New depot for Swift -repeated on Pg. 62 

Pg. 22               The first iron horse came to the county in 1900 when the Canadian Northern came into Warroad, Swift and Roosevelt. The Great Northern RR came to Greenbush in 1904 and into Roseau in 1908. 

Pg. 25               Court House ‘Boards’ are submitted? 

Pg. 27               Canadian National should be Canadian Northern 

Pg. 28               Glesner should be Glesener (twice); Norman Hahn should be Hohn. 

Pg. 35               Heading should be Area Newspapers, verify information regarding the histories of the newspapers. 

Pg. 43               Billy Booze should be Boos. The boat chartered was the Knute Nelson (typo) 

Pg. 47               The one missing was H.B. Stene not B.H. Stean 

Pg. 48               Should be Arnesen, not Arneson 

Pg. 48               Photo; The Lakewood and the Warroad Hotel are two separate entities and both are shown. 

Pg. 48               Louis Cugnet died in 1911. Surviving him were his wife and one daughter plus two sons, Albert (1903-1959) and Pierre (1901-1970). The dates are on the cemetery plat. There was no son by a former wife. Mr. Cugnet had only one wife, Emily Gunning Noble, who was born in England, immigrated to Canada, met and married Mr. Cugnet in Montreal before settling on the shores of Lake of the Woods. They had a son Louis Joseph in 1894. Louis di3ed in a hunting accident on September 7, 1909 at age 15. Mrs. Cugnet had a son form a former marriage, James Noble, who came to Warroad in 1901 to live with the Cugnet’s and died in August, 1902 at 23. Mr. Cugnet built a general merchandise store on the south side of the river because he thought the town would develop on that side of the river. When it didn’t happen, he put the building on skids and moved it to the north (not west) side of the river, west of the railroad tracks.

Pg. 82               NaMayPoke does not belong in the middle years. He died in 1916 which is the early years. Ervin Parker was of Warroad not Warren

Pg. 88               Chief AyAshAwash died 12/12/1899, see the Plaindealer 12/14/1899, documented. NaMayPoke was paid $150 for school land which is documented 

Pg. 91               Fur Post sign does not mark the site but gives directions to the site. 

Pg. 92               Tree was cut down in 1970 not 9170 (typo) 

Pg. 98               For more information regarding the Warroad Creamery look in the papers. 

Pg. 99               Heading should be Roseau Area Churches, there are no east end churches represented. 

Pg. 102             America post office with Harry Sanders is on his homestead, Am Twp, sec. 12 not Clear River sec 7 in 1903. See PL 3/12/1903. 

Pg. 111             Warroad’s first school was a tar paper shack near the lake shore. The first teacher was Tom Jones, the first school day was June1, 1897. The new log school was erected on west Lake Street in the late fall of 1897. 

Pg. 144             WPA built Warroad’s hospital in 1940 

Pg. 149             Please verify information about the Warroad banks. 

Pg. 150             The Security State Bank of Warroad was not incorporated in 1903 as the Bank of Warroad. The two banks are separate entities with the Security State Bank incorporating in 1912. Mr. Thomas Brusegaard was the president of the Bank of Warroad (4/9/03). The Bank of Warroad became the State Bank of Warroad in 1904 and the directors of the State Bank of Warroad, not the Bank of Warroad were Hedberg, Lundbohm and Berg. 

Pg. 151             Should be Dickson not Dickerson (twice) and Julius Brown not Julia        

Pg. 162             Carlquist home was used for hospital beignning in 1921 not 1929; PL 7/28/1921 for $7000 not $7500 (not confirmed). By 1961 not 1962 an addition was needed. In 1962 the addition was completed. WP 10/26/1961 

Pg. 167             Photo is of Ed Stebore in Jones’ buck skins it is not Max Jones copied from the Northland. NaMayPoke did not donate the land, the district paid $150 for four acres.

 Pg. 170             Photo; the name is A.J. not A.I. Landby  

Pg. 177             Under Elevator the name is Alonzo Toomb not Toome

Pg. 200             Flying Game Warden was John Parker not Jon

Pg. 236             No organized hockey in Roseau County in 1895. Warroad had organized hockey and played international hockey with Rainy River in 1904 which is documented. In the 2nd column the Lakers began in 1947 not 1949. The name was Ed Holland not Al.

Pg. 239             Warroad had 3 golf courses; south side of the river, at Bloom school, and the Estates. Myron Grafstrom had nothing to do with the course, see page 55 in 1992 Roseau Book. Bob Anderson, Cal Marvin, with Dayton and Sam Grafstrom developed the area for the Estates. Under the Badger BB players the area is Carter Hontvet, not Hontvedt.

Pg. 303             Check for accuracy.

Pg. 313             Roseau County established Dec. 31, 1894 not 1895. Algoma Twp organized April 5 not 8 and 1902. Disregard information about 1st post office in America Twp. It was started by Sanders in Sec. 12, later moved to his half brother’s farm in clear River on Sec. 7. A 2nd post office started by Andersons on their land in sec. 19 called Conrad. Richard Goldner took over and moved it to Sec. 29. There was never a post office in sec. 1.

Pg. 314             Mary Stoltz not Stol. Check the Heritage Book as well for error.

Pg. 317             Lake Twp. Organized April 21 not May 3. Algoma organized April 5 not April 8

Pg. 318             Moranville; Copied from Heritage Book pg. 67 which was copied form the Northland. Moranville was organized on Jan 4, 1899 not 1892, in that year it was part of Beltrami county and was not open for settlement.
