The first
newspaper in Roseau and Roseau County was the Roseau Region
. It was started by Andrew J. Clark (not C. Clark) on August 23,
1892. Andrew J. Clark owned the Region for almost
three years. He did not sell the paper to Medicraft. There were
several other owners in between Clark and Medicraft. A. J. Clark
was known as the “Old Man of the Tabernacle”.
Roseau and
Roseau County’s second newspaper began three years later. It was
the Roseau County Times and was started by R. J. Bell on
July 26, 1895.
The first
issue Badger Herald was published in January 1896.
The first
issue of the Rustler was published on May 1898 in Roseau
and was was edited by Charles A. Lindsay and owned by Durgin &
Jensen. After a few months Durgin assumed responsibility. George
W. Thompson took over the paper in April/May 1899. The Rustler
was moved to Badger in August 1899. Harold Sanders/Sanders
Brothers consolidated the Herald and the Rustler in
September 1899.
The
Plaindealer/Pioneer
was begun in Roseau by W. H. Book in September 1897. W. H. Book
and Harold Sanders moved the paper to Warroad in May 1899.
An interesting
side note -in 1898 Roseau had four newspapers -the Region,
the Times, the Plaindealer, and the Rustler.
In 1899 two papers were left, the Plaindealer which went
east and the Rustler that went west.
The
Greenbush Journal was started in January 1901 by Harry E.
Sanders (not Harold). Harold J. Sanders worked for his brother in
1901 and bought the paper from Harry in 1902. The paper changed
hands between the brothers a couple of times.
